With all the current discussion concerning containers, I'll would like to tell about Root Builder containers. Root Builder containers come in 100 foot rolls. The rolls come either 18" or 30" in height. With a Root Builder roll a grower can make containers from 5-gallon to 300+ gallons in size. The time it takes to make a container is approximately two minutes. I have converted all of my larger trees over to Root Builder containers. Two of the advantages are: (1) Root Builder containers have air root pruning technology, therefore the tree's root system NEVER EVER has curling roots that circle around and around the container walls. (2) The container can be opened in less than one minute to visually check the entire root system, and then, if needed, either be enlarged into a larger container, or just re-closed. Therefore the tree can be transplanted into a larger size with ABSOLUTELY ZERO (0) stress to the tree. Lastly, they can be resused over and over. - Millet

If I understood well, it's a plastic grid that you build in cylinder to make pots?
OK, thank you.

Funny you mentioned this. I was thinking of using something like the Root Builder material to make a custom sized container for inside my new barrel. Based on our other discussion regarding putting a tree in too large of a container, I was going to proceed with a pot in a pot method when I realized today that my larger pots that I was going to use inside of the wine barrel are actually too tall. They would stick up out of the wine barrel by 3 inches. I was going to use a perferated weed barrier fabric that I'm experimenting with for growing some of my other trees in. I was going to make a container out of that to fit inside the wine barrel. On the outside I would fill it with Pine Bark and on the inside, I would have the tree and CHC/choir bedding material. The Root Builder sounds like it would function along the same line as I was thinking. Below is a sketch of my proposed planting:

I figured I can also conserve on my CHC material by not using it where the roots would't be growing. The coarse pine bark I would think would allow air enter in around the root ball.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Any fatal flaws? Are the openings in the Root Builder large enought that the roots might grow through them into the bark material? Maybe a Root Trapper would be better for this application.
