Here are some more photos from the expo. Alan's pictures cover just about everything I took shots of, so I will keep it brief.

Prof Hanna discussing his hardy citrus improvement project.

Close up of the Changsha display showing the reduction in seed number in some of the seedling trees.

Row of Ichang lemons which are also being irradiated to produce seedlessness. I think Alan mentioned that they have just started fruiting, so any results will have to wait until at least next year:

This one needs no intro:

Ornamental tour. This turned out to be much more interesting than I expected.

Thanks for the extra photos Ned. I'm glad to see an update in the irradiated seed and actual fruit from those trees. Here's the link from last year:

I think I read that you missed out on tasting the seedless changsha fruit. Hopefully you were able to get some budwood. Nice work on having the only Aussie entry!

Thanks for the refresher eyeckr. Dr. Hanna is a very knowledgeable, and interesting person.

We missed you, and the other folks that frequent this forum, who were unable to attend. I hope you can make it next year.

Ned,

If you have any other photos please do post them. There were at least a half-dozen other varieties that I shot that did not come out clear enough to post and I never did get shots of all the tables.

The ornamental tour really was something, but he was going through the binomials so fast in places that I couldn't keep track of them all. The oilseed camellias are something I'm going to look into later when I have more time to focus on ornamentals.

Sorry Alan, I didn't get many in the judging room. Wish I had taken more. Normally they have a lot of them posted on the SPS website, so we will have to keep an eye out for them there. Also, Keith had some nice citrus pics of his yard, posted on the Hardy Palm board, that you might like to take a look at:

Does anyone recall what the real name of that palm I won in the raffle is? Obviously I misheard or misremembered what it is. You can see a piece of it in the auditorium photo I put up.

Thanks for the great pics, Ned!!

Alan, the palm you won was a Chamaerop humilis (Mediterranean Fan Palm or European Fan Palm)

Eyeckr,

Noone was really encouraged to try the Changsha fruit, and especially, not the seedless fruit. UGA is collecting data on the quantity, number of seeds, and sweetness of the best fruit. The "seedless" Changsha fruit provided for viewing seemed to have numerous seeds in it also.

UGA may be looking for participants to trial the new selection for hardiness in the future.

Dr. Hanna allowed me to sample the seedless fruit that had been cut after the lecture was over and everyone was leaving when I expressed interest in it. I thought it really quite acceptable. The half that I ate had one half of a seed in it. The other half had the remaining part and what looked like one other seed. I'll go back to the original photo for a closer look, but that's all I recall seeing. I believe that makes it commercially seedless by the industry definition does it not?

We should all look forward to his releasing it in the hopefully not-too-distant future. I wasn't forward enough to ask him for budwood though!

Thanks for the palm name, Keith. I don't know how I got the tail part in there but that explains why I wasn't coming up with anything by that name. Other than our native Florida palms I know little about them.

I suspect Dr. Hanna might have removed some seed from a few fruit & put them on display as "seedless", to prevent any seed from a true seedless fruit from getting away from him.

I don't recall exactly now, but didn't he cut those fruit when we all walked out there? But maybe he cut them in advance.

Here's a closeup photo that I took along with the others one of the seedless fruit and the regular seeded one next to it.

If he pulled seeds out of it then it's not readily apparent to me.
