Hey everybody! I have visited someone who haves a kumquat tree and he gave me a cutting because i don't have a kumquat.

But i've read on another forum that kumquats grow very badly on their own roots. So is it worth to try growing a kumquat from a cutting?

The motherplant has kumquats on it and the cutting is from a smooth branch who is probably 1year old because it had the beginning of some fruits (little buds). The cutting is almost 4inches and it i've removed all the buds and leaves exept the leaves on top of the cutting, i've cut them and left a little piece. Below, i've removed the bark around the cutting and put it in rootone (for cuttings or seeds).
I put the cutting in a little plastic pot of 4inch. with a mixture of peat and flowerground. This is now standing in a little fish tank with some gravel in it (so it doesn't stand in the water), it's covered with glass on top of it and it's standing indoor next to the window ('bout 68° F).

Thanx!!

Good luck.. I have not had any luck with rooting Kumquats.
I would suggest trying to t-bud graft to another tree just incase it doesn't root..
aside from that I would not have the fish tank in direct light. the temp will get over 100*F easily in direct sunlight..

Again good luck!!

Thanx, i could try that Smile I have some plants grown from seeds like 2 small lemon plants (3years old), 2 orangeplants (2years old) and another citrus (5years old??) but from the last one i don't know the specie..
I prefer to use an orange or lemon because i have some more of them.

Kumquats are very difficult to root even under ideal conditions. This holds true for satsumas also.

I could be wrong but I don't think Kumquats are as picky about the root stock as some.. hopefully some one will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong..
If you have enough buds you could try both the lemon and orange..
