Has any one tried a styrafoam egg incubator to germinate seeds? I use one I bought on E-Bay for I believe $30. It will keep temp. + or - .10 of a degree. Have had a 90% germination rate. If I remove seed coating, will sprout in 1--1 1/2 weeks. If coating is left on will sprout in 2--2 1/2 weeks. Wave tried it on Orange, Kumquat, lime, all sprouted about same time frame. |

Do you have any pictures or model numbers of your incubator? I was looking on ebay and they were all big bucks. Maybe my seach criteria was off. They do have those Hydrofarm heat mats also, but between those and the thermostats, they tend to be $60+. Another thought . . . I used to work in the pet industry and they had this "heat tape" material that I used to heat the bottom of snake cages with. It was razor thin and you cut it to size and connect it to the electrical. Only issue is you would still need a thermostat of some kind. Check out this site for the heat tape: http://www.bigappleherp.com/Flex-Watt-Heat-Tape

Some seed types would require diurnal fluctuation in specific temperature ranges before they will germinate. A constant temperature would have just killed those seeds.
Most seeds though are okay with constant warm temperature. And for that, moist peat moss together with seeds inside a sealed ziploc bag placed on the top or sides with warm updrafts of a garage fridge or freezer is the cheapest thing that works for such kinds of seeds.
So the device, if it isn't programmable for the diurnal temperature fluctuation would not be of much help with some seeds. But if it is programmable to set those two ranges of temperature and will operate unattended, then indeed the device is well worth it. |

If you had a cheap on/off timer like you use on Christmas lights, I wonder if that would provide the adequate warming/cooling cycles.

Phillip It's called " Little giant". Another auction site you can check is eggbid,it's a site for selling game bird eggs. If you watch you can get one for around $20. Just type in eggbid it will come up,then click on supplie ,then incubators. When it comes up, look at the hoovabator above it, there the same.I raise partridge and use them mostly for hatching there eggs. About the timer,I dont use one for seeds mentioned, I'm sure you could use a light timer that you can buy about anywhere for around $10 you can set it to to turn inc. on or off,to get different temps.. I also wrap seeds in a moist paper towl. Just using the plastic bag method works probably almost as well, but Incubator keeps seeds at an axact temp. & by my experiance, it germinates higher percentage of seeds for me. |
