Does anyone know if the Manila Mangoes from Home Depot or Lowe's is grafted? I looked real close and couldn't see a graft line. It appears to be a long thin, continuous twig about 4 feet tall. I'd like to get one, cut it down to about 2 feet so it will branch and grow it in a pot.

Not 100% sure the tree is from the same place but a member from another forum was asking a similar question. We found the company where the plants came from. The list of plants on their website had two lists of mangos. One list just showed the names of the plants, the other list was under the heading "Grafted". And the plant he was looking at was not under this category. I cannot remember the site. On a young mango, I would think that the graft site should be quite apparent. I would be quite skeptical at this point. Just my two cents.

Ong's Nursery in San Diego will have grafted mangos and I'm sure there are other nurseries as well. Good luck. J

They are from LaVerne nursery I believe. Manilla mangos are polyembrionic and I have heard seed grown they will be almost identical genes. I'm betting they are just seedlings because mine doesn't appear grafted that I bought at HD.

If they are from La Verne Nursery, the growers of my Manila Mango then it would be grown from seed and not grafted. I have seen avalibity lists from their nursery and Manila mangos are not listed as being grafted. They are quite a bit cheaper than the grafted varieties.

I would be a bit hesitant to top the tree. My tree grows very slowly and is naturally wider than it is tall. I do experiance frost and that does kill or damage the exposed branches.

If they are indeed from seed, will they 1) be suitable for a pot and B) take several years to fruit?

I personally believe you will get more satisfaction from a grafted plant. It will definitely take much longer to bloom/fruit being grown from seed. Be choosy with the variety. There are several that are better suited for container growing...juilie, cogshall, ice cream, nam doc mai...to name a few.

I already have a Carrie and want another mango. I always see Manila locally so it would be easy to get plus I like that kind. I also like nam doc mai but can't find it locally. I'll see if I can find a grafted Manila.
