I was at a nursery greenhouse today and the lasy said that citrus is now illegal to ship into Canada. I don't really believe this because I haven't heard anything about it, so I was wondering if anyone else had heard anything regarding impotation to Canada. _________________

Importation into and out of Canada is illegal. I was supposed to receive some seedlings from Canada and they got snagged at the border. I received a notice from both the USA and Canadian agricultural centers that the shipment was illegal, Canada explained that it was also illegal for me to ship any plant material, even seeds into the country without a phyoto certificate. It really sucks as Canadians have a hard time obtaining some verities of plants.

Sorry I no it is illegal without a Phyto. certificate but this lady gave me the impression that even with a phyoto. certicficate it is illegal. The only thing I am thinking of it that most nurseries up here buy the citrus from florida, which is in lock down now for sending citrus even to other states. But I am still no sure. _________________

I have heard for a long time now, that you can send seeds anywhere - even to Canada. I sent & received seeds from Netherlands too. Seeds don't carry disease (correct me if I'm wrong). It's what I read.
I recently sent out plants/cuttings to 2 states here. I usually write on pkg. "Fragile Live Plants", but one went to CA & I did not write "Live Plants" on that box. It was not citrus, but a flower (brugmansia). I was afraid they would tear the box open if they saw "Live Plants" written!! She should've gotten it Thurs /Fri, but I have not heard from her yet.
Just don't write on pkg what you are sending LOL _________________ Patty

its not illegal... IF bare rooted AND with the phyto. BUT you have to bring across the border yourself OR have them shipped through a nuserery... as the can border can hold for up to 2 weeks and by then dead trees. I live on the border and can bring across with the proper documentation |

Canada is a sovereign country, and as a sovereign country has every right to regulate who or what crosses its border. I can appreciate the reasoning behind the Canadian government's strict policy against citrus of any type being imported into Canada. All it would take is just one diseased tree with canker, or tristeza to completely wipe out Canada's entire citrus industry.

Yes that is what I thought I, because they have had citrus before but I think because florida can't ship international or even state wide that they don't want to bother with it any more. _________________
