yes the 30 yr old Sabal minor survived the frigid 80's cold waves - record breaking here... the 20 yr old trachy continues to thrive. what surprised me was the gardenia August Beauty and the eucalyptus and of course the citrus

There are dozens of hardy trachys in the area, the one in Sterling has around for 20 years next summer and has seen -10f over the years, there is also a 30 yr old sabal minor same area. John's are no different, we seem to have found the hardiest of the genetically hardy ones and also have focused on soil, fert and water.

Trachy that survived -10f (-23C) without protection and experienced regular 0F, it is probably a world record.
Even for sabals it is quite an achievement.

Joe.........perhaps you can place a temperature probe on the Citrus this week and we can compare the micro temps to your city's 'official' temps. This would be interesting to know. Your suppose to get a little chilly this week

Temp in F

Temp in C

we havent been above freezing for the last 130 hours. Im tired of this cold. headed for a balmy 33 today!

Joe aside from the citrus I am always amazed at the palms you are able to grow. I planted a few Pindo, a needle and a sabal a few years ago and the following winters were pretty mild. this winter will be true test. I imagine I will lose the Pindo's. I protected them the first winter but not the last two.
