Bought a bag of them from walmart of all places this evening. One tasty piece of citrus...and I don't imagine that the highest quality fruit graces the produce section of 'ole walieworld. These were Sunkist and I ate 5 of them.
I can't wait until they are available here in Florida.
Best,

I have always had the suspicion, although without any evidence to substantiated it, that citrus sold by the bag were a lesser quality grade than citrus sold by the piece from the fruit bin. So I have never purchase bagged fruit. - Millet |

Seriously...even the peel on these things is sweet. I suspect that you are correct Millet. In the case that you are indeed correct and as it applies to these little nuggets of goodness, even the bad ones are good.
Best,

Woah, woah, you can eat the peel on a Gold Nugget? It's sweet and tasty like a kumquat peel? |

Wouldn't go so far as to say that you could eat the peel but it is markedly sweeter than other oranges that I peal... I start the process of pealing an orange by making a tear in the rind with my teeth. In doing so, I get a little taste of the peel.
I like them a lot. Even braved another trip into the bowels of discount commercialism this morning to get another bag of them.
Best,

I wish we could get them here. They are seedless so I can't even grow them from seed |

You are correct. The lowest grade fruit for human fresh consumption is bag grade (not what they call it but it is where it goes)... and they pay the farmer (orchard owner) the low end of fresh produce too. So, it tells you how good these mandarins must be.
It is possible however, that stores like Costco, Sam's Club and even Walmart may selectively order their fruit (of better quality) be bagged for delivery as they often sell in bulk. _________________ Freedom's the Answer!

Fascist Nation, that's one thing I will not have to worry about, as I never ever shop at Wall-Mart, nor Sam's club. As for Costco, I don't think I have ever been inside of a Costco store. - Millet |

I bought some myself @ wally world and @ publix- and they were great
So if they were great, purchased from probably one of the biggest citrus producers in the world(Sunkist) , picked early / not yet ripe , shipped all the way across america and finally ended up in my po-dunk town here-- what will they be like harvested fresh and ripe off a back yard tree
Dont look for any plants to be to be available in Florida anytime soon as Peter Chaires (NVMDC Exec.) will not be letting any of them out, Harris has some budded but he wont let them be released for sale. Field trials only to the selected citrus growers(big companies) |

They are excellent fresh off the tree. My tree is in full bloom at the moment & I should have a great crop this year. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

I don't believe so, it's a CA licensed tree. I got my budwood from Benny years ago. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...
