Laaz, how many of your variegated varieties did get off of your own trees as sports?

Wow! How long did it take to assemble your variegated collection?

Ah, I just saw this photo, Laaz! How very cool! I think my Cara Cara may be sporting some variegated branches. Going to have to watch for that. Although not that rare, it's still fun to see something sport like that. Still trying to identify the Persian lime branch that is sporting the pigmented fruit.

Here's what the Persian lime looked like when I cut into it:
Photobucket

Here's how I found it: Last spring/summer I was up picking fruit up on my upper back slope (my citrus are split back and front). This Persian lime was care of the previous owner, who tried mightily to kill all citrus trees on the property (there were 6, and I did manage to save them all.) Not so much a fan of the insipid Persian lime, but I have enough space not to have to shovel prune it. I was picking up some of the fallen fruit from underneath it, and no, I didn't have any blood oranges up there in fruit, yet. Definitely what I picked up from underneath was a Persian lime. I brought it into the house and wanted to taste it again, and try to like it better Confused When I cut into the fruit, it was pigmented! Not super red, but most definitely pigmented with anthocyanin, it looked a lot like my Sanguinelli oranges. I tasted it just to make sure it wasn't an orange. Ick, ick, ick. No, it was definitely the insipid Persian lime (I'm still trying to develop a taste for them.) I about had a heart attack! So, what I really need to do - might do it tonight in fact - is get out there with some markers, a knife, and a bowl, and start picking and cutting of off each branch until I can find the sport branch. If I can find the branch, I'll let you all know. Amazing.

Patty,

You may have mis-spoken. Persian lime is identical to Bearss lime and is not insipid. You may have meant Palestine sweet lime which is insipid. The fruit in your picture does not look like a Persian lime.

I believe jrb is correct. If you figure out which branch is producing the pigmented fruit, I'm up for a stick or two of budwood. Wink Razz

My guess (only my guess) is that it is not a Bearss lime, on two accounts. First, it is pigmented, and second Bearss limes do not produce seed. - Millet (335 ABo-)
