VERO BEACH Acting upon a suggestion from the Indian River Citrus League, the United States Department of Agriculture plans to purchase up to 34 million pounds of grapefruit juice for donation to child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs.
Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner made the announcement on Thursday. The USDAs Agricultural Marketing Service purchases a variety of high quality food products each year for distribution by USDAs Food and Nutrition Service.
The purchase came about after Doug Bournique, executive vice president of the Vero Beach-based Indian River Citrus League, approached USDA in September about the Agricultural Marketing Service Program.
That is about 2.8 weeks supply, and that is substantial, Bournique said. It will help firm up the grapefruit juice prices that growers get. This purchase is the single most significant measure that USDA could do to support the grapefruit growers in the state of Florida, and we are thankful to Secretary Conner and his staff for their support.
The Indian River Citrus League is the Indian River growing districts organization representing over 1,000 grower members with over 150,000 acres and 22 affiliated packinghouses in the Indian River Citrus district.
