VERO BEACH — Acting upon a suggestion from the Indian River Citrus League, the United States Department of Agriculture plans to purchase up to 34 million pounds of grapefruit juice for donation to child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs.

Acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner made the announcement on Thursday. The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service purchases a variety of high quality food products each year for distribution by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.

The purchase came about after Doug Bournique, executive vice president of the Vero Beach-based Indian River Citrus League, approached USDA in September about the Agricultural Marketing Service Program.

“That is about 2.8 weeks supply, and that is substantial, “ Bournique said. “It will help firm up the grapefruit juice prices that growers get. This purchase is the single most significant measure that USDA could do to support the grapefruit growers in the state of Florida, and we are thankful to Secretary Conner and his staff for their support.”

The Indian River Citrus League is the Indian River growing district’s organization representing over 1,000 grower members with over 150,000 acres and 22 affiliated packinghouses in the Indian River Citrus district.

....................." for donation to child nutrition and other domestic food assistance"........................

Your welcome (even though there goes more money out of my pocket via the tax give away program).

Before I saw your post, I was thinking the same thing. Parents that buy the junk food now have a healthy choice. Maybe I can get the USDA to pick up the tab on my fish oil supplements. Smile

A big problem with the current generation, as apposed to our grandfather's generation is more and more the current generation is looking toward the government for assistance. Our grandfather's generation looked to themselves and family. My grandfather would have been embarrassed to receive assistance from the government. The best government is the least government.

Agreed with Millet there about being self-sufficient and minimum intervention. Complainers and whiners on the other hand necessitate big government and multitudes of lawyers ever after, no wonder that's where we are right now.

The only qualifier that I would add is there's nothing wrong about complainers and whiners, when whining about big government. Smile Or does complaining about big government cause government to grow . . . ohhh the vicious cycle Smile

The funny thing is now that I've been in the public sector for 3 years, I've come to the realization that the intelligence of the elected officials really is representative of the intelligence of their constituency. The recent fires we had knocked the power off to the pump station serving the town I work in and the town went dry for several days. The public blamed our Board of Directors for not having a standby generator on site to keep the 12 million gallon a day pumps delivering water at 1000-feet of head. After calling for the Board to be recalled, the Board pointed out that they did try to put a generator at the pump station, but the voters shot it down when it was put on the ballot. The public must have had collective alzheimers disease. They need to stop eating the government cheese and start eating government citrus. Smile
