Patty. Great feeling to go out & pick your own fresh figs! My plants are also loaded with figs, but it feels like it is taking FOREVER to ripen!! All I can do is wait for that big day!!! Enjoy.- Vinny |

Hi Vinny, glad you have a bunch growing. I ate another figgy today
It's from the same 18 inch tree.
A girl name Michelle sent me a small cutting - only 2 inches high, in fall of '03 -04, and also sent a ripe fig for me to taste as I never had one. Last yr it grew lots but only one fig that didn't ripen in time. She was saying (on diff fig forum) that it produces all year & never goes dormant! Everyone was asking her for a cutting, so I did too. Then she said nurseries were offering to pay her for cuttings (they read what was posted). She was never agian heard from. It's a Brown Turkey & so is my biggest tree. The big BT has small unripe figs so far prolly cuz I root pruned this spring. I didn't prune branches cuz they had buds greening. I plan on pruning it this fall after figs are done.
It's amazing that's it's my smallest tree & has the most figs! If you want, I'll post a pic of the biggest BT & this 18 inch BT. You will see the diff in figs & size. All in all, seems this is a good year for figs.
Just want to add that, last yr, the only figs I got was from my med size golden Honey from Paradise (closing this yr ). I got one ripe fig from either Osbourn Prolific or White Genoa (don't remember). This year I will have a bunch of all of them (5) (except I'm not sure of my BIG BT).
Don't anyone buy any fig trees! I have cuttings that are rooted or rooting of the 5 varieties I have.
How's everyone elses doing? _________________ Patty

My BT died, my petite negri is growing, branching slowly, but looking good, and my golden celeste has taken off! its almost doubled in size in 2 months. I can dream of figs next year, but i would get over it if I didnt.
Home Depot here has BTs, pretty big for like $15. i want one but im getting the cuttings this winter... SO little room left! |

Has anyone had some leaf loss with this heat?
I have two figs on my BT, but since it has been hot, I have lost several leaves, almost like it's going dormant. No change in the watering. Good healthy looking buds around the end of the plant.
Thoughts?

I have never seen any problems from heat with my figs. I don't know what kind it is -- just a piece from the one at my childhood home in Alabama.
Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis blew it over sideways, but it still had a bumper crop-- made picking a little easier.

SB, I had no leaf loss during heat. The pots are pretty much shaded & ones in sun are painted almond. I gave them extra water..I noticed a few plants got a little droopy but perked up after a good cool drink.
Ate another fig today See the ripe one here more than inch across? That's the one LOL

Then this is not good. I wonder if the tree is suffering from not having a deep enough dormancy period. The plant went staight into the GH last fall and didn't get below 54F all winter. I was a fig rookie last year, didn't even realize they went dormant.
It is potted in CHC and grew like crazy this spring. Will have to check roots, etc. Any other ideas?

SB don't worry about not enough dormancy. Millet says he has fig in his greenhouse that just go into dormancy at temps for his citrus! So, that seems to not be an issue. I read that they need cool/cold dormancy but also hear that they just know when to rest no matter what the temps are (preferrabley cooler). So, I dont think it's your temps. I would get them out of CHC's. They are very good for some plants but not for all. I have mine in soiless peet, prlite, composted manure, a little sand & whatever.
I'd get it out of your CHC mix & add good well draining mix with similar mix or whatever. CHC is not good for all plants. Let's talk again when comes time for dormancy _________________ Patty

Well the time has finally come! Since my last post, my celeste has been ripening away:). So far I ate about 5 figs. I seem to get a ripe one about everyother day. They have been worth the wait. Now I just have to get my other types to ripen.- Vinny |

Here's a pic of my fig pickings from about a week ago.
2 big It. Golden Honey, 1 Osborne Prolific (bigger), & bunch of smaller than usual Brown Turkey's because I did a drastic root prune last spring.
Ate about 15 more I.G.H. since, & couple O.P but have many more White Genoa, Petit Negri, Osborn ripening. I like the darker figs best.

Hi EZ, thanks. I ate all of those & many more LOL. Remember, in our trade, you sent me the Osborne Prolific, White Genoa (ripening) & Petite Negri (still ripening). Is it Negri or Negronne? O.P is my fav so far.
How's the cherimoya's doing? Did they blossom or set fruits yet?
Sure, C'mon over & help me eat the rest! I'm getting figged out LOL _________________ Patty

Patty:
I still have to taste the fruit of fig tree EZ gave me.
I made a mistake of mixing dish soap and malathion and routinly sprayed the leaves. The leaves turned splouchy brown but still had green pigments on them but the fruits are still hanging there.
Unfurtunate to my Fuji apples, all the leaves that were sprayed turned brown. |
