Hi,

I feel like such a citrus murderer, 4 trees down, 4 fortunately still alive, but only just. I find it very hard to follow the advice on here as the UK/USA climate is so different.

Are there any Brits that can explain their guidelines as to how to look after citrus in this country. I love citrus, but this is getting too expensive!

At present, have just moved all tree's outside as temps are 6 deg c at night min and up to 22 deg c in daytime, I bring them in if forecast under 5 deg c. I fertilise every feed and have just changed from winter to summer fert. They are in terracotta pots. In winter they will be kept on south facing window, radiator off.

Your advice, (not only from Brits) would be very much appreciated!!

P.S Also posted another thread with photo's etc

link

Thanks.

Ben

Hi Ben

First let me say that I'm not in the UK anymore as I now live in Thailand but I did grow some citrus there and now I'm involved daily with my customers who are mostly brits.
A lot would depend on what citrus you are growing of course but as a general rule of thumb, citrus can be kept outdoors from April to October/November depending on the weather.
Another mistake many people over there make is over watering. With the cool climate you have in the UK, your citrus really don't require much water. You may want to try cutting back on the water for a while and see if they improve. Remember, mature citrus trees planted out really don't require water unless you're experiencing very dry periods. Another thing I would suggest is to cut back a bit on the feeding. Don't forget, if your trees are not doing much growing then they won't be needing too much food. An old trick they use here in Thailand is to feed with spoilt milk every once in a while and while I can't say if it helps with all citrus, I do know it helps with Kaffir Lime.

Anyway, good luck and if you would like to chat abot it just PM me or email me directly.

Cheers
Shane
