One of my Cretan date palms has decided it is going to bloom this spring, will gibberellic acid work for palms as well ?

Oh, and Stan you're going to be a grandpa, these are the date palms I got from you as 1 gals in 2005. Laughing

Also GA3 works on germinating palm seeds faster.

Preparation of Seeds:
After selection, the next fundamental consideration in palm seed germination is preplanting treatments. There are many treatments that are routinely used to enhance germination
percentages. A list of common treatments follows:
Soaking in water for certain periods of time
Scarification – cutting, filing, or soaking in acid
Stratification – cool and warm, which duplicates a natural seed-bank situation
Removal of seed from the fruit to eliminate natural

Yes Millet, but date palms are either male or female. If this is a female, will the acid work to fertilize the female flowers ?

No it does not pollinate a palm, it does not work on palms the same as it does on citrus. Millet (311 BO-)

My god, the blooms smell like dog crap ! My wife insisted that a neighborhood dog had crapped in the front yard this morning. After I investigated, it is the palm blooms. Shocked

Is that the female?

I have Phoenix Sylvetrus, Phoenix Reclinata, Trachycarpus fortunei - Windmill, Chamaerops humilis - Mediteranian Fan, Rhapis Humilis - Slender Lady, Chamaedorea Radicalis and Chamaedorea Microspadix all in bloom now.

I'm happy to say none of them smell like dog crap. Very happy indeed!

I have no idea what sex it is, I have three of them but only this one has bloomed. I have most all of what you have as well & all are also blooming.

This is the only one that smelled like dog crap & only the first day when the pods opened.

I'm surprised the Phoenix Reclinata has done well in your zone, I tried them & all where dead after the first winter.

The winter of 09/10 and 10/11 were very harsh for us. We saw 19 several times. The Reclinata showed extreme browning (lost all fronds but no spear pull) but has come back nicely. I am currently experimenting growing them under dense high live oak shade. I only have one left exposed to the sky to use a a standard in the test. If they do well in the shade I am expecting a more graceful looking palm as they should stretch and reach for the sun. Could make for some interesting palms. I am doing the same thing with Queen Palms. I also have a Livistona Mariae growing in the shade.

Palms grown in the shade look like crap in my opinion. There are quite a few Butias here that are in the shade & look pathetic, very thin & stretched out.

That may be my Reclinata's fate too and if that is the case I'll let them live till they die but will not acquire any more. I wanted a skinny tall growing clumper with feather fronds but it isn't looking like I can find one for my growing zone.
