My meyer lemon has been loosing its leafs again and I noticed to day that I have little brown dots all over my leaves that look like dirt. Well one of the specs of dirt moved. Then I realized that it wasn't dust on my leafs because the specs have guts that can be smeared! Most of them don't move but I think that is what is hurting my tree. Help! What can I treat my trees with to get ride of it?

You probably have spider mites--spray with horticultural oil or lime sulfur. Be sure to get the bottom of the leaves and you may have to repeat in a couple weeks.

There are several that can be used, most garden centers will have a couple brands. Ultrafine, Volck are two that are probably most common. Main thing is to spray when it is cool, never in the middle of the day, never when it is above 85 F. Use a 1% mixture--this oil spray kills by suffocation--it is not toxic.

I have heard that you can use soap and water. Is that true? Does it work very well?

It will work, but for spider mites I don't believe it is as good as the oil--it may be the oil is better at killing the eggs. It also works by suffocation--wetting the waxy coat of the insects.
