MESA, AZ -- The state is paying roughly $500,000 to remove an estimated 52,000 dead citrus trees left abandoned in San Tan Valley southeast of Phoenix.
Arizona State Land Department officials said the trees cover 688 acres of land near Roberts Road and Hunt Highway.
The trees were left abandoned by a business sometime around late 2006.
Removal was expected to begin the last week of December.
State officials said the trees are a fire hazard. Neighbors said the grove is a nuisance because it attracts insects.
The tree removal project was expected to last a month.
