Who all of us in this forum were there to sample the numerous
Citrus on display for our pleasure?
Mom and dad went there to represent us here at Snickles.
They were there right before ten and left right at eleven as
they had other places to go yesterday such as drive through
Exeter to the Lindsay highway to stop in at Cairns Corner
to load up on Lindsay and Porterville grown cured Olives
and then high tail it over to the Horizon Outlet Center in
Tulare (the city where dad was born). From there then off
to Uncle Harry's in Reedley for an always agreeable early
dinner and then a leisurely drive home the back way into
Fresno through Sanger and Clovis.
Dad said the sampling of so many Citrus can be overwhelming
and that next year he will work things a little differently. When
we go through the lines starting with Navel Oranges and then
end with a Finger Lime and a Fingered Citron that we go from
sweet to sour which makes the sour and insipid tasting forms
even more so, that we cannot be objective with them when we
save the "pucker uppers" for last. Dad said he will go through
the Navels and then sit down and evaluate them before he goes
onto the Mandarins next and then sit down again and evaluate
them as a group and then proceed to the rest of the Citrus in
groups next year.
All in all it was a wonderful display of Central San Joaquin Citrus
fruit from what I was told. A well coordinated event with state (UC)
research staff and various County Master Gardener's on hand to
help out and answer people's questions is what Jim said. It has
to be one of the most significant Citrus tastings of its kind the world
over and said even then there were some Citrus forms available
to growers and to the public that were not there. Mom came away
with a large collection of Citrus recipes that were already printed
out and on hand for anyone to take home. I dont think she missed
any from the stack I got to see.
We all are going next year including me.
