Hi , I have some sprouted Key lime variegated seeds but all of them are just white , no green on their cotyledons so I'm a little concerned about getting some variegation .No true leaves until now.

So maybe someone had an experience with them , do they look ok now to be albino , or tey will day eventually for sure.

Thanks
Daniel

That is a trait that happens to many seeds of variegated citrus. I hope you didn't buy these off that clown on Ebay... I have never seen a variegated Key lime, what is the parent source ? Photos ?

Your chances of getting a variegated plant from seed of a variegated plant are almost 0%.

I got them for free from someone who made a voyage in Malayesia.

he told me that the fruit from where he got the seeds were labeled Lime , so variegation was on them , and I supposed that they scould be key lime since is the most common plant

The problem is that I saw somewhere that it is possible to obtain variegated plant from seeds , and he managed to obtain a quite considerable number of intermediate seedlings

http://www.homecitrusgrowers.co.uk/poncirustrifoliata/variegatedseedlings.html

here as you see , picture number two , where the seedling is "trying" to have some green spots.

I was hoping that from 5 seeds I have at least one should be variegated , but I have only albino.

So sad , I really want a variegated citrus , no matter what type it is.

Sad

If you ask Mike, I don't believe any of those turned out variegated.

It is hard to believe that the last one in the picture , with all those green leaves had not survived.

We can ask him , maybe Very Happy

I believe some survived, but reverted back to green.

I''ve sent a PM to Mike if he has some updates on variegated seedlings

Laaz this is strange , how is possible to be green again ? Isn't this some sort of "disease" of the seed ?

To be perfectly honest, I don't know whether the last plant in the website photos died or survived. What I do know is that it didn't produce a proper variegated Poncirus plant - because I still don't have one. So it either went completely green or it died.
However, I do have one citrus variety that has definitely produced a variegated seedling from a variegated mother plant. That is the old bitter orange Citrus aurantium 'Virgatum'. I assume that the seedling was a clone of the parent - not a result of sexual fertilisation. The degree and colour of variegation (bright white, but only on a few leaves) is exactly the same as the parent. This seedling started out green but then produced its occasional variegated leaves from two years old.

Thanks Mike. I have a sour orange that has that same trait. The fruits are always variegated, but the leaves will only sometimes show a white variegation... Very strange plant.

I don't know what the cause is, but nearly 100% of seeds that I plant from variegated plants come up albino.

Ok , that explains it.

I was afraid that only I have this sort of luck Laughing

I'm somehow searching for a variegated citrus , no matter what type it is , I would prefere Pink Variegated , so it will be hard to get it from seeds

Variegated pink Eureka is very common, you should have no problem find it.
