I found some Cara Cara oranges in the grocery store today-- I guess they are considered oranges-- but they taste more like a sweet grapefruit---are they related to grapefruit?

I pay more attention to variety in the citrus fruit I buy now and I know there are a lot of varieties that I have not tried, but so far the nules clementines are my favorite --hands down. Second would be the mandarins that we bought in So. LA-- I think they were ponkan. The naval oranges I got in So. LA were the best oranges I have ever had.

I will be over there in the citrus growing area (in So LA) this weekend and am looking forward to a citrus tasting frenzy.

For those of you that don't know it-- the citrus groves in So. LA (3 state away) are far closer to me than the citrus groves of Florida (4 hr vs 8 hrs).

I had my first Cara Cara (red naval) store bought last spring. It wasn't as sweet as orange and had a berry-like taste. No grapefruit taste here. I liked it so much, I bought a tree LOL. It isn't grafted though..must be from a cutting. It's small & bushy & is now loaded with unopened blossoms.
How lucky you are to be able to drive to a citrus grove!

At the expo, Millet was telling me about how Cara Cara got it's name. I think he said it was a sport of Washington Naval Orange, that was discovered on a citrus farm (plantation) in Brazil. The plantation was named Cara Cara. Hope I didn't mess this up too bad Millet.

They were packaged by Sunkist-- They called them " The Power Orange".

I like them, but not my favorite.
