Ohh, I could have fun in one of those. I've been looking at tractors, but I can't justify the price of one right now. I was looking at an old Ford 9n, but I didn't want something else to maintain when I can't get my other chores done.

A Ford 9N tractor by now must be around 45 years old. A 9N, and also the 8N, just seem to keep on ruining and ruining and ruining. However, the old saying is still true, "Nothing runs like a Deere." - Millet (1,383-) |

There were some old John Deere's I was looking at also, but the Ford had a 4 cylinder engine while the Deere was only a two cylinder. Displacement may be similar, but just my gut telling me 4 is better than 2. The specs showed the Ford 9n had slightly higher horsepower (26 HP if I remember correctly). I don't recall the Deere.
With the economy in the mud right now, some tractors are going for decent prices. Our inspector at work said he say a Bobcat with reasonable hours on it go for $2300.

i would be a little nervous just riding in the bucket,
my brother has been buying tractors. he has like 5 last i heard and he does not even have a yard to use them in. about two years ago he sold his business, a transmission shop. now he has more time so he buys them and fixes them.
he finds them through craigslist. _________________ looking for cold hardy citrus

I have four John Deere tractors, if you count the riding lawn mower. A large tractor, a middle sized tractor, and a small sized tractor, and the John Deere mower. Kind of like the children's story - the papa bear, the momma bear, and the baby bear. Myself, I pretty much just drive the small tractor and the mower, my sons do the farming with the larger tractors. - Millet (1,382-) |

I remember the old 2 cylinder Deeres--we used to call the putt-putts--you could hear them a mile and you could tell when they would almost bog down from their load--it was like they could slow down to less than 1 stroke a second and then pick right back up. I think those 2 cylinders must be a big as paint cans! _________________ Skeet

hehehe.. reminds me of when I was learning to drive.. Uncle Nolan (Stretch) put me on a tractor and said when I could plow the entire field with straight lines he'd take me to get my license... it was a miserable OLD tractor.. i had to stand.. Let me just say.. I did not get my license that summer!!!
But I did have fun.. and am probably a better driver for it.. with it's super slow to react controls I had to think WAAAAYYY ahead of it..
It made a kinda put put sound..
I can't recall what type it was.. other than loud.. I don't recall that it ever had a seat..
That was the one and only time I have ever gotten to drive a tractor..
and.. straight or not.. I plowed all 5 acres.. over and over.. was some super soft stuff by the time I was done with it.. maybe Uncle Stretch was just getting out of his chores?? oh well.. I learned any way and had fun doing it.. well.. fun to a 15 yr old....
Though Being in the bucket was scary.. it was exciting as well.. I would do it again.. if only to do more grafting!!!!!!!
