I planted a Satsuma this spring. It is about four feet tall. It had two marble sized fruit on it when I planted it in late March. In late June it is beginning another set of blooms. Is this unusual for a Satsuma? If not, am I likely to get any decent fruit from this bloom?

I know fruit from a very young tree may be less than satisfactory - on the other hand, I am of a certain maturity that buying green bananas is considered a risky business.

Thanks for the great forum. I only wish I had gotten into citrus 40 years ago.

Hello Dale, welcome to the forum--it is always good to see someone from Florida join. As for your satsuma, I do not know how cold it gets where you are, but satsumas do best where they get cool fall temperatures--it increases the sweetness and color. If you are in a warmer winter climate, the later fruits may do better that the early fruits, provided they get enough heat to develop a good flavor. Heat increases the flavor, cold increases the sweetness.

Well, we expect normal highs to be in the low 90s from June through September and lows of about 69 from October through December. Frost is no surprise in January - February.

But my real question was about the second bloom on the Satsuma in late June. If no one has experience with this, I will post results later in the year, assuming the blooms set fruit.

My Meyer lemons are also producing a few blossoms (no surprise) but I also have new blossoms on a recently planted Honey bell.

I am a recent transplant from Ohio, so it is taking a while to figure out what goes on here.

BTW, I am located just north of Orlando - about a mile north of Ponkan road! Among the locals the accent is on the "kan".

It is normal for most citrus trees to bloom a little, now. It's referred to as the "June bloom." They may set some fruit, which will be referred to as "June bloom fruit" or "late bloom fruit" or "off-season fruit." Such fruit (regardless of variety) tends to be big, lumpy, rough looking, and tends to be less flavorful than the March bloom fruit. It's certainly edible, but generally not as good.
