Alleluia! Hosanna! Yippee! Thanks to your guidance on propagating key lime trees, my key lime seeds are sprouting. Now, I need to NURTURE my seedlings. My dormant fig and pomegranate cuttings should be here from UC Davis next week. Also, I can't wait to try my hand in citrus grafting Pomelos onto my "Wild Orange" tree. I had an orange tree freeze in the 80's that is coming up from the lemon stock. It is covered with ugly lemons which are quite tasty. I pick the wild lemons, squeeze them, freeze the juice in ice cube trays and put a cube in glasses of water or soda pop.
Thanks again for all of the information that I learned from this group,
Diana

Even with the coolness of "winter" in Florida, my Key Lime tree seedling are growing strong. This morning, Bruce and I did "surgery" on the seed casings, so the emerging trees would not mold and would grow even better. I got a lesson from Bruce on seed cultivation. I think (and maybe a little too positively) that these dear seeds sprouting during the Florida winter is helping them get hardened to the habitat in which they will live. We'll see how they develop.
Thanks, again,
Diana

Diana, citrus seedling are susceptible to a disease called Phytophthora, commonly known at damping-off. Damping-off affects newly germinated seedlings of all citrus cultivars. Typical symptoms of damping-off result when the soil or seed-borne fungus penetrates the stem just above the soil line and causes the seedling to topple. This disease lives in wet soils. Therefore to protect you Key Lime seedling be sure to water only in the morning, and then set the seedling in the sun so the sun's rays will quickly dry the surface of the soil. Good luck with you seedlings.
