Greetings all:

I have started a long term project, of trying to get some decent citrus to grow in my Zone (9b)

So I am hoping to get some rootstock started, I have not been able to locate a commercial source of rootstock or rootstock seed, without haveing to purchase Ginormous quantitys

I am looking to get some Hardy orange seeds either Flying dragon, or standard sour orange, so I can grow my own rootstock.

I figure between the time to get rootstock grown, and get some good healthy grafts going, and with Global warming, I should be able to be growing my own citrus outside of my greenhouse in 5-7 years

Jim

In about a month when the fruit ripen, I could send you sour orange seed. I have so many of those fruit I end up throwing the majority of them away. Patrick

Seeds are legal anywhere. I sent & recieved seeds from Europe & all over this country. Seeds don't carry disease.

Actualy seeds are not legal anywhere... and can cary disease. (well if Citrus Canker is considered a Disease)

There is a Federal Quarentene for seeds out of florida to any Commercial Citrus growing areas

Hi Jimmy, I didn't know this & I'm a little surprised. I just read that seeds don't carry disease, but plants do. Maybe it's OK to send to a friend & not to a commercial citrus orchard?
Oh BTW, planting zones have changed. There are no "A's & B's" anymore. You might be in a new zone or just Z9.

I live in MKE & we were Z5b same as Chicago, but now MKE is Z5 & Chi is Z6. Must be a little global warming?! Check out your new zone--if it is new.

I kinda mispoke/typed, Instead of saying not legal anywhere, I should have said, not legal everywhere, no that does not sound right.

Ok, how about Not everywhere they are legal... hmm not right either

ok, how about this, there are some places that seeds cannot be sent from, so some places, specificaly Seeds from florida of certain plants, to Commercial Growing areas.. Hmm, still confusing...

Generaly it is legal to send seeds from anywhere to Anywhere, but if you are in FLorida, then you have to be carefull about where you send your seeds....

Hmm, Maybe it would be easier to Address the Zone Issue....

I actualy say I am in 9b based on observations of local temps, rather than what the maps say, one map said I was in Zone 8, another said zone 9

LOL arbor day says I am in Zone 6,7,8,9, and 10 LOL

although there are no maps that are detailed enough for me to pinpoint my location to get a zone, the USDA 1990 Map, actualy lists Victorville, CA as 10A (the USDA still uses the a/b designators, the Arbor day Zones are done by arbor day, not by USDA. But Like I said I have never found anyplace that acurately describes our zones, but I can tell you this

Our temperatures here range from 25F to 110F
we get 3-10 inches of rain per year
our First Frost usualy happens around november 15
Our last frost is around March 1
We have about 80 days a year over 90F
and about 35 nights a Year below 32
ALthough the trend is currently for less of each, for the past 5 years
Our Daytime/Nighttime Temperature change averages 35 degrees
With over 3300 heating degree days
and 2000 cooling degree days

and we get wind here, with lots of wind March-June

Nope that was not easier... Hmm, I think I should just go out to the Greenhouse and Hide
