Now is the time Seminole Tangelo reaches perfection in New Zealand. They have been on sale for 6 weeks which is a disgrace as they are too acidic in July and only reach perfection now.
Juicy sweet with a slight acidic bite. I just picked one..Gorgeous!
My 2m tree on trifoliata stock is loaded with fruit.
For more than 30 years or so in NZ if Tangelo was mentioned it was always Seminole that was meant as it was the only one grown.
Is Seminole unpopular in the US?
When I read the citrus/tangelo info on the net all I ever read about is Minneola.
Hardly ever Seminole. Even orlando doesn't get the same write up as big M which I find rather bland whenever I buy a fruit..

Measured in acres planted or tons produced, Orlando is the most important tangelo in the US. Minneola is second, but probably more popular among hobbyist growers, since it is the superior fruit, but has production problems (mainly that it needs to be cross-pollinated and will then be seedy, and GA sprays to substitute for pollination result in a green, misshapen, "puffy" fruit that cannot be sold). Seminole is seldom grown here, perhaps because of what you've observed, it's quite sour unless almost overripe.
