just bought a hardy kiwi (Issai, self fertile) today. Hadnt stopped at this greenhouse before. I really dont know any more fruits I could reasonably get right now- I think ive reached the boundaries of sanity!

its got one tiny fruit on it, ill pot it up- weve got probably another month before it frosts hard... I bet dragonfruit and kiwi salad would rock....

Our local walmart was carrying kiwis this spring. make/female plants... the golden variety. stated they were cold hardy... but every variety I looked up, would not survive our winters... so I passed them by. I didn't realize how addicted I could get with my edibles (I had yet to buy my citrus trees) So... I'm thinking if I could research kiwis, I may purchase them this spring if they are avaliable and container grow them. if I can do pineapples, citrus, poms, mangos and hopefully bananas, I SHOULD manage kiwis

Would love to see a pic of yours... how hardy is it, I sure would love to start growing some things in ground... just as long as I can uproot em and move to other areas if I move. renting sucks when you hae a plant addiction

not growing bananas yet. Hoping to aquire a tree this week when on my hollidays to the coast. I do know that it'l lbe container grown, a dwarf variety that I can bring in in the winter. as long as it stays 7ft or under in height, all is good

Might just have to get my kiwi's this spring Smile oh gowd, yet another hting to star growing. pretty soon the plants will over take the house and I'l be forced to sleep in the car

UTOH... I found a plant my oldest daughter wants to grow.. she hasn't realy cared much about the citrus.. I mean.. she helps plant seeds.. but is not EXCITED about the citrus.. or banana.. or any of my other plants.. It was just me and her at the store today picking up a few things.. and so I asked her.. what would she like to grow.. well.. she wants to grow Kiwi... so we bought some Kiwi fruit and brought it home for the seeds...
Any suggestions???
turned out the fruit was over ripe.. she was sorely disapointed.. those were the firmest ones i could find in the pile.. probably why they were 3/$1.. But I guess that wouldn't make a difference to the seed??
Any help would be apreciated..

I'm so glad to finnaly find a plant my oldest daughter can get excited about!!! she is 15 and keeps telling her sister that she can't have the plants in their room.. but they have an ideal room as their room is upstairs and has south east and west windows!!! At this time there is only a tiny banana pup allowed in the room.. maybe if i can get kiwi to grow my oldest daughter will agree to more of younger daughters plants.. that would free up about 6 spots down stairs!!! LOL Very Happy

I havent learned too much about them, but there are species that survive to zone 4 or so. They are not tropicals, so i dont think bringing them inside would work. They might tolerate not freezing in a garage like figs, but im really not sure......

If the fruit was over-ripe, the seeds should be extra ready! just give it a try.
Good luck!

oh my!!! COOL!!! yummy mini Kiwi and no winter protection!!! And no FUZZ to boot!!!!!! Ok.. lets not mention this to my daughter ok?? but I think I need one of the hardy kiwi!!! I still have lots of fence space that can grow stuff!!!
I am going to try gettting the seeds from the fuzzy kiwi to grow for my daughter.. just getting the hardy would defeat my purpose.. I told my husband he groaned till I explained it all.. and then he said.. "and I've been blaming you for ALL of the plants?? I'm sorry!!" I told him it would be great if I could get all of youngest daughters plants upstairs.. Their room is more than big enough.. They could easily put 6 good sized potted trees (about 6' tall) along the south wall and it not make much difference in their room.. Right now all of youngest daughters plants are in 10" pots and smaller.. She has the one banana upstairs.. honestly I'm not sure it will make it.. though it has been two weeks and it is still alive.. I was worried she would not care for it if not reminded and it was a pup that the didn't get any roots.. but she insisted on caring for it.. Mind you I have to remind her regularly to care for her guinea pig.. but I have not had to remind her once to care for her banana.. I do all the care for the plants down stairs.. I will ask for help from her when I do stuff.. but as I'm already caring for the others....
Guess I need to start a new thread maybe??
Sorry to rattle on Garnet.. Thanks for the eye opener!!! Good luck with yours.. maybe in a couple yrs we will have to trade cuttings or something of our Kiwi?? Wink
