Hi,
A couple of years ago I bought a 5 ft high Meyer Lemon from a local nursery. The tree needed some care but despite my efforts the tree did not survive. I cut back the trunk to 2 feet and noticed many new side shoots, so I decided to let them grow. Little did I know that these were Poncirus Trifoliata shoots. After 1 yr, approximately 10 new shoots grew.
This summer I clipped all but two of the strongest and cleft grafted a Tavares Limequat to one and a Fukushu Kumquat to another. The Tavares has taken, the Fukushu is slow. Below is the photo link. The middle shoot is another new Poncirus, left branch is Tavares, right is Fukushu. Should I leave the Poncirus shoot for another potential cleft graft? I could potentially have 3 differerent varieties on the original Meyer lemon/Poncirus tree that I almost discarded!
BTW:Thank you for this terrific Citrus Growers Forum.
