I thought that the term was simply an Oxymoron. But the cultivar has distinct character. It is a true sweet lemon - flavorful, medium-sized fruit is excellent for use in juice and cooking. Has few seeds. And the flowers are fragrant, beautiful, with blushed pink. It is a vigorous upright shrub.

Pomona Sweet Lemon has good responses from various friends. It is just simply sold as Sweet Lemon by Menlo Growers in Gilroy. The Pomona Sweet Lemon is available from the UCR CCPP budwood program from their screenhouse materials.

The Pomona Sweet Lemon was contributed by La Verne Nursery to UCR CCPP budwood program. La Verne is still selling the Pomona Sweet Lemon to wholesale customers and not retail. Clifton's Nursery is among one of La Verne's big customers.

It is in one of my budwood orders. Will have to add it unto my multi-grafted lemon tree.

I tried the Pomona Sweet Lemon at the last walk thru at Lindcove in December and found it not to be sweet at all, it was very tart! Shocked I'm not sure if it was just too early or what, but I'm curious if anyone has had a different experience?

I tend to evaluate cultivars at their keeping limits in my yard to take note of their best flavors. Many of them have surprised me. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know their performances until after three years from the day I grafted them.

I bought a Pomona off ebay, it came with several fruit on it and it was hard to tell when to pick them. My husband ate one at the end of last summer, and I tried one in Dec. Neither had much flavor, but they weren't tart at all. Kind of hard to get your head (and taste buds) around the idea of a non-tart lemon.
