We had a mild winter but longer than usual. This both HP Pumello. On the right is on it's own roots. On the left is grafted to a trifoliate.
I've often heard that grafting to a trifoliate will give you a couple of degrees of extra cold hardyness.
So my question is, "Is this an example of that?"

Maybe, maybe not.

I think what trifoliate does is cause an earlier and complete dormancy to the scion during the wintertime.

I'm not sure if the trifoliate 'sap' actually gives it more tolerance to cold temperatures - sort of like an antifreeze. Maybe it does. Does anyone know?
