Yes did it a zillion times,
We simply cut the cane so that it would have at least two nodes, then bury entirely in the ground completely flat or slanting to max of 30 deg. Then the rains and the warm tropical air will do the rest.

Am still looking for a cold hardy type but with bigger stems. The cold hardy ones available have stems as big as budsticks, no perhaps about the diameter of a small sharpie. I need something that is about at least 1 1/2" diameter and cold hardy.
