I got a handfull of pawpaw fruit this week after a long wait. I've had one pawpaw tree bloom but never two different until this spring. I got some pollin from a friend to hand pollinate these fruit. Blooming this spring was a miracle as well as the hurricane last fall had them blooming the wrong time of year. These fruit came from a noami's gold tree bought from a northern source. To me the fruit smell like pineapple and taste like mango. I also have an east texas native pawpaw that a friend collected. I dug up a couple dozen root suckers at his house in the spring the last two years and had none die due to transplant shock.

One good thing about this fruit is the birds didn't bother them as they are green until they fall from the tree. I can't say the same for my muscadines the birds are feasting on right now!

We only get 400-500 hours of chilling here in southeast Texas. I guess pawpaw doesn't need a lot of chilling. I have two Neal Peterson cultivars growing as well.

I have half a dozen or so named cultivars chip budded to my east texas native.

Mr Texas, thanks for sharing the pics. I had 2 very small paw paw trees for 4 yrs and 1 died. A friend sent me some nice 4 yr. olds that are doing very well.. much bigger. I'm sure I'll get blossoms next yr. I never ate one, so the pic of one cut in half was interesting. I don't see any seeds.. I thought they were seedy, maybe like cherimoya.
Chilled paw paw was George Washingtons' favorite desert. Laughing
