Citrus Joe in Colorado sent a DekopanSumo afew days ago. The fruit is large, peels easily like a mandarin, has a thick rind , is necked. and has a very good taste. His son in California sent him several fruit. I feel pleased that one was shared.

All this Dekopan/Sumo talk is getting to me. I'm going to have to call the Whole Foods stores out here.

I called Whole Foods in Ft. Collins CO and was told there was not enough supply of this fruit to distribute other than in California but that they were hopeful for next year.
Then again, AZ is much closer to CA than we are. Might be worth trying-good luck.

I should call Whole Foods and make them a deal. If they can procure a source of Dekopon budwood for me, I will topwork all of my 25 year old trees and give them first rights to purchase the fruit at 10% off from what they currently pay. Smile

I had a friend send me some fruit from Cali. The fruit was large and very sweet, but much to hyped. My Ponkans actually taste better.

After reading up on Dekopon, it is a hybrid of a hybrid...

It is a cross of Kiyomi and Ponkan. Kiyomi is a hybrid of Miyagawa and Trovita.

I would guess the flavor depends on the area it is grown in, but the fruit I had were not as good as my Ponkans...

Dekopon quality for sure depends on region and also used rootstock. For example, here is an article about "Effects of 'Konejime' (Citrus neo-aurantium) rootstocks on tree vigor, fruit yield and quality of 'Shiranui' [Citrus hybrid]" compare to trifoliata orange as rootstock of Dekopon.:

Indeed. I have found that on my trees which are 90% trifoliata stock, the trifoliata produces the best quality fruit.

Laaz,

how do they survive winter? Do you protect them? How would you compare the fruit quality on sour orange and on trifoliate stocks?
I'm curious since grafted a few nice things on SO last year...

Thank you!

I don't have Dekopon, I am referring to my Mandarins and oranges.

Ah... Yes the trees on sour orange are more vigorous and do produce a bit larger trees, but also see to have more damage during freezes.
