A few years ago I bought some bareroot citrus from a forum member that I was very happy with. Because I lost my old account password and email (user was brianPA, I think), I forget who it was.
Anyway, I'm looking for a half dozen or so plants, all edibles. Please reply to this thread or PM me if you have stock or suggestions.
I'm going to check Fourwinds also but they don't always have what I am looking for.
thinking about:
- orange-type kumquats, non-nagami as they can be bought at the store.
- blood oranges.. torocco? sanguine? I forget which types are known for flavor. I didn't think Moro tasted very good
- any mandarin with exceptional flavor
- ruby/rio red or similar grapefruit
- ponderosa lemon |

In my opinion the two best tasting mandarins are #1, Xie Shan (many think it is the best tasting citrus period), and #2 Ponkan. Page is also a really great tasting mandarin (its only problem is its small). - Millet |

Thanks. I've never heard of Xie Shan, I will have to look into this. The other two are on my list for when I can find them. |

They're all dead
I didn't plan overwinter care very well and all fourteen of my trees died when I went on vacation a few years ago. They received far too much light & heat and not enough water. I was pretty mad at myself and gave up on tropicals to focus on hardy in-ground trees - apple, stone fruit, etc. Now that my orchard space is full I am finally restarting with citrus from scratch this spring. I'm about to start construction of a heated greenhouse... just cleaned out the area and am applying for a building permit. |

Sorry to hear that. Citrus can't take much below freezing for any duration. I'm grafting up a bunch of stuff over the next few weeks, so le me know if there is anything you are interested in. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Reading up on Xie Shan it sounds like I would not like it as much if it is known for extreme sweetness. I like sweet/sour fruits, sometimes peeling and eating whole lemons. I guess everybody has their preference, I should start looking into varieties that others dismiss as too sour. Ate a few calomondins recently that were very tasty. |

You might really like Meyer lemon, they are sour but with more sweetness then regular lemons. |

Xie Slhan is not a sweet fruit, just as Page is not a sweet fruit. What Xie Shan and Page are, is well balanced fruits. The amount of sweetness, or acid in a citrus variety is not the taste quality factor of citrus. What gives an appealing taste and quality to citrus is ratio, and that ratio is the balance between sweetness and acid. Balance is what makes Xie Shan, Page, Ponkan and as Laaz mentioned Miyagawa, such great fruits. Actually in my opinion the current popular Dekopon, although considered a good enough fruit, is not a great fruit, because it lacks good balance between sweetness and acid. Dekopon is too sweet. - Millet |
