For about a year, I have been sharpening my knife using a metal paddle embedded with tiny diamond particles, which does a very good job.
I have often considered getting a strop, like barbers, and my Grandfather (he would never use a "safety" razor, even though they were available while he was still with us) used in the past. Years ago I use to use an old belt for the same purpose, and, some time back, I came across the idea of applying a thin coating of automotive buffing compound to the belt, prior to stropping my knife. This has greatly enhanced my ability to put and keep a good edge on my knife, with much less effort.
I couldn't find a used belt, so I also brought a cheap, single ply belt at Lazz's favorite all-in-one store, where I also brought the buffing compound. I seldom have to use the sharpening paddle any more, just buffing it on the improvised strop a few minutes before use puts a razor edge on the knife.
In the past, I have mention at this forum that I use a special utility knife with a carpet layers trimmer blade. I still use the utility knife, but mainly for cutting buds.
