Hi There, my name is George and I live in Antigua Guatemala. I have mandarins, grapefruit, Washington navels and Meyer lemon trees in my garden. I have no leprosis afffected trees.
One of my friends has cara cara navels, and I am thinking of grafting one of his varieties to a rootstock. His cara cara's have leprosis.

Was wondering if this is a bad idea, as i dont want to introduce problems into my garden. He does have budwood that is symptom free, and I have read that the disease is not systemic, but i thought i would if anyone has some experience with this. Thanks so much

The disease is not greatly systemic. I would be cautious.

If this is a friend living close by then you may have the mite vector on your property but not the disease. If your friend lives a considerable distance away you may not have the vector and that is why you are disease free.

If you are using symptom free budwood you should be fine. But I still am concerned. If the graft is infected with the virus it should not spread far out past the graft union. But if a vector feeds on an infected graft . . . how bad do you want the buds? There are some great fruit I would take a chance on, but not others. If you do proceed keep your eye out for lesions and if detected remove the scion along with 6 inches (15cm) of the branch containing the graft union and burn them or otherwise kill any vector present. Keep an eye out for any emerging lesions elsewhere for a while.

Leprosis is not that difficult to control. For your friend's tree, regular miticide sprays will control it, and the tree should recover just fine. - Millet

Thanks all, i think i will try it, keep the tree isolated for a year, use separate pruners etc. Appreciate the responses.
