Citrus Joe, and I paid Mr. Bonnie Childres airfare from Houston, Texas to Denver, Colorado, and in return Bonnie put on a one day school on budding and grafting. The day school included films and a LOT of actual on hand grafting. Joe and I had supplied the trifoliate rootstock, and Bonnie supplied the budwood. It seemed like he must have brought just about every variety of Satsuma budwood known to man. We budded all of them. Citrus Joe and I could possibly (when the success of the budding is known) have the largest private Satsuma collection in the western United States. Bonnie is a most excellent teacher and guide. His personal pride in his profession certainly was evident. My favorite graft was the Banana graft, also named 4 flap graft. I had never heard of this graft before. It is a straight up graft between the stock and the scion. Besides citrus we did some work on Walnuts. Mr. Childres, has been professionally grafting for 44 years, and I can guarantee you he know his profession. For those who do not know Bonnie his screen name on our forum is Buddinman. BONNIE, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! - Millet |

Hey.. Have you ever thought of having a Central or northern states citrus expo type thing Millet?? I could surely drive to that if all the further I was going was CO.. Denver is about a one day trip for me.. I've driven To Farmington N.M. from here in about 15 hrs..
West coast or east coast.. pretty much same distance to travel for me.. and more than double travel time from here to there.. Been thinking of going to the one in TX.. but I would dearly love a good "excuse" to see Colorado again..
I bet you all had a great time!!!

Hi Millet, I too like the four flap bannana graft, as I mentioned in another post it is the one that has worked best for me on pecans. I am looking forward to trying budding on citrus as soon as it cools off a little-- It was 96 here today-- but if the buds don't work I will probably try the bannana graft on citrus.

Thanks for the pictures Lazz. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Bonnie, so it is good to be able to put the name and face together. It is also good to see another old dog in the group.
Are those trees in the tall, two gallon tree pots? I brought a case, and I like them a lot better than a #3 nursery pot. The trees do much better in them and end up with a healthier, deeper root system.

Hi Ned, those look like the 4X14 inch pots I have. Millet told me about this place --I have those and 3, 4 & 8 gal tall pots, reasonable prices. They tip over easy, but 9 (4") fit perfect in a milk crate & 9 in a bigger milk crate.
