Uh oh. The passed three nights we've had temps in the mid to low 30s here in N. Florida. I covered all of my plants (I use old sheets) but I have noticed some damage on a few of my plants, that may be frost related. Grapefruit and orange trees have some leaves that are blackened and curling starting from the tips working back towards the stem. When I touched them they easily came off. How do I know how far the damage has gone, and should I trim the branches that are currently affected now? Or should I wait until the extent is apparent on the rest of the tree?

I also noticed that on some of the little branches it looks like the bark is splitting. Like an old knot in a tree, I searched for freeze cankers (I think that's what it's called) but could only find it on larger, older trees and not on young citrus. Are my trees doomed?

Thank you in advance,
Christine

Hi Christine. When you get a quick frost or freeze when the bark is slipping, it splits open on the tender growth. It should recover without a problem. Wait until you see new growth & cut back to just above the new growth.

WilmingtonIslander:
None of my trees have bloomed this year, they didn't bloom last year either. I've had them for two years, all are planted in the ground, and they only bloomed and produced fruit that first year that I had them. Have done nothing since then except put out new leaf growth.

Thank you Laaz. I'm glad that they will recover. I'll wait longer to see how far the freeze got on them.

Christine
