Everyone knows what a female scale looks like. It is the small round scab looking creature on leaves and branches. But did you know that the male is a small flying insect, with a pair of wings much like a fly. The male eats nothing, in fact it does not even have mouth parts. Therefore, lives for only one or two days. - Millet (764-)

Trouble is that many species of scale insects don't need a male to reproduce. The females can rapidly produce offspring asexually through the process of parthenogenesis.
