Last week I saw this wine & had to buy it. It's a semi-sweet, product of Armenia, & is 12 1/2% ABV. Also on front label it says "Proshyan" all by itself --don't know what that means.
Anyway, I opened it tonight & it is soooo good! Very dark red...gotta go back & get more if still there. Makes me want to grow the fruit!
JoeReal, aren't you making pomegranate wine- or did you? It is excellent. Smooth & mellow & not too dry to make you pucker.
I'm celebrating being done at refinishing 5 floors incl. kitchen (took off 2 layers of flooring to find same maple flooring as rest of house). I took off 60-70 or more gal's of sawdust in all! Then put 5 coats of urethane on. Almost done moving all furniture in place & wiping EVERYTHING down from dust, dust, dust EVERYWHERE, even thought there was a bag on rented belt sander. Floors look BOOTIFUL! _________________ Patty

I have 4 gallons of pomegranate wine. They're not yet bottled. Tasted them a couple months ago and they taste perfect already. Two gallons have been committed to the original owner of fruit and I got to keep 2 gallons.
In the Biblical times, it is the exotic wine of the nobilities. |

Joe:
Speaking of wine, belated thank you for the 6 bottles of wine you gave me Joe. But I dare not to taste it they are so special I am saving them for very special occation.
I know I asked this before and Joe gave me some brand name wines that are semi sweet but my wife is so picky she has not approve of anyone that I bought so far.
What she wants is " sweet" wine.
Is there any body there for a second opinion who had tasted sme goood sweet wine? |

Benny, look for Gewurtzraminer wine made by Forestville. You cam find these in Long's Drug, Rite Aid, Nugget, Safeway and Albertsons. I would go to Safeway if you want to get them quickly without searching. Your wife may like it. It is among the sweet wines available retail, but it has low alcohol content. Another sweet wine that you may want is Kosher Wine that says Concord grapes. These are available from Long's drugs. Ask the salesperson for Kosher wine. |

As usual, thanks Joe for prompt reply.
I'd search for it ASAP. |

Benny, I have a liquor store at my local Pick & Save (grocery) that sells 2 kinds of concord grape wine...one is Manischewitz (spell) & they are very inexpensive. Another sweet wine (well, at least what I made) is plum wine. Chinese restaurants have that, so you 2 should try a glass there. I bet your wife would like the plum.
I went back to store today to find the Pom wine & it wasn't there. Then, after clerks were helping me look for it, I realized I bought it somewhere else LOL. Will go there tomorrow. Man-o-man, that is good stuf!
Valencia, I never heard of Ice wine. Is it anything like Ice beer which has more alcohol in it? _________________ Patty

Thanks for the replies Valenciia and Patty. Yes Ice wine I am not familiar with.
Patty I already tried a plum wine which I bought from an oriental market but did not agree wiith my palate. It could have been used for a cooking wine since it was located in that area where it seemed all the bottled wine around it was for cooking wines. I'll try to look for the concord grape wine, the Manischewitz .
Joe, the Longs I went to did not have much choice of wines and I did not see any that you mentioned.
Next I'll try safeway.
Thanks guys for letting me know. |

Ice wines are wines that are made with grapes that have been left on the vine until frost or at least very cool weather causes them to shrivel and increases the sugar content. As a result the sugar content exceeds the amount that can be used by the yeast to make alcohol and therefore the wine is very sweet.
BTW, I was told that grapes are the only fruit that is sweet enough to make wine without adding extra sugar.

In addition to what Skeet says, the best ice wines are from the grapes that are frozen on the vine by not harvesting it and usually are not shriveled but just ripe. ALthough some grapes would be shriveled at this time. But shriveling on the vine or not depends on the weather since we are waiting for the grapes to be frozen on the vine in the field. When the first cold freezing night or storm is overdue, you will have lower quality ice wines due to overly shriveled grapes before freezing starts. So timing of the weather is crucial. But when the first freeze comes, the workers work like mad to harvest the grapes before they thaw back, and work like crazy to press the juices out. Letting the grapes stay on the vine longer, they would expand and crack, and when they thaw, they will be completely ruined. So timing is crucial. We now have a revival in this wine when we are able to forecast the weather with greater accuracy and plan the work force accordingly for the crazy icy harvest.
The idea behind ice wines is that literally, you press the fruits after they have frozen. Doing so, the very first juices to flow out would be concentrated sugars and nutrients, because these are the last one to freeze, and when you press the fruits, they are the first ones to flow. This is the very principle behind why ice wines are sweet and tasty. But it takes more than twice the normal fruits to make ice wines compared to normal wines. Thus they are expensive, at east by twice as much as the normal wines.
Ice wines is not limited to grapes, the same principle can work for other fruits. Persimmons for example, which you usually let them stay on the tree the entire winter, you can make ice wines out of them. Other fruits can work as well, but you need to do the freezing and pressing yourself since they can't wait for winter to freeze them on the tree. |
