I know this was discussed some yrs ago.. Well.. I've done it!! Granted they are not citrus but my luck during winter with my poor babies while I'm sick.. they are lucky if they are alive let alone.. So I've tried to develop a better orchard that will be dormant outside needing no extra care from me.. not to mention that I'll be headed to Cali in just a few weeks or so..
I'm just not sure how much the inverted bark graft reduces the size of the tree??? I did it on two "standard" trees a Cherry and an Ornimental Pear.
Also graftedd Bartlett pear, Johnathan apple, and moon glow pear to this Pear tree and grafted Another Cherry and two Plum to the Cherry tree.. Just wondering if the inverted bark graft will keep them below 20'? If so I can plant the infront of my house where it will have constant attention should anything be a miss with them..
There are power lines and the city will top my trees and want them removed... They have alreay taken a cottonwood ( I was alergic to so was happy to see go) and a maple and it was not a great loss as it was overly common on the street..
any way.. I was Showing a friend about inverted bark grafting and a few various other things and was embarased when I didn't have an answer to how much it would stunt the growth.. I'm keeping the cherry and the pear is going to a mutial friend of ours... would also like to be able to say where would be a good place to put the pear...

to clarify. I took the bark off the trunk of the tree turned it upside down and reatached it and covered with parafin tape. I recall a discussion about this some years ago that it would stunt the trees growth but I don't recall to what extent it would stunt growth. or at what age would be best to do this.. I'd like to get the trees planted this week as we leave for Cali this week.. but where I plant them depends on how tall they will grow.. if it doesn't stunt the growth much ie a 30' tree being 25' tree will have to plant far away from power lines... but if will stunt to 15'-20' I might could chance it...
Thanks!!

actually on the "onrimental pear says 30-50' and I think it will have to go on the side yard regardless.. Confused

Guess time will tell.. The trees are still in Kansas and are (should be) planted by now. I gave advice could get as tall as max but might dwarf it a bit. so put the one to friend in area where will have plenty of room to grow if need be.. and the ones for my house will be planted on the north side of the house the field is rather bare and could use trees tall or not..
Will report findings if any worth reporting.. Wink
