Joe, many fruits that are called "Limes" do not even belong in the species Citrus Aurantifolia. This might be the case for Black Twig Lime, Ginger Lime, Millsweet. Australian Desert "Lime" and Finger "Limes" are not in the species C. Aurantifolia, but still are commonly called "Limes". Just as Temple "Oranges" are not really oranges at all. - Millet

"Persian" lime does not exist as a tree. It is a marketer's term used to sell 'Tahiti'/'Bearss' limes. Just as you can buy chicken fryers in the grocery store, yet no chicken farmer raises "fryers" -- they are "roasters" until the feathers come off, then voila! They transsubstantiate into "fryers." So "Persian" limes only exist in the grocery store. And I've always wondered where that name "Persian" came from -- certainly the lime has never been grown/marketed/known in any of the area of ancient Persia (mostly Iran today).

As stated above, if they have seeds, they are none of the above; they are 'Key' (a.k.a. Mexican, a.k.a. Indian) limes. 'Tahiti'/'Bearss' averages fewer than one seed per 1000 fruits, if grown isolated from other pollenizer varieties, and perhaps one seed per 15 or so (I'm guessing here from personal experiennce) fruits in the presence of good pollenizers.

Joe, I was unaware that the 'Bearss' selections from California all had the wood pocket disorder. It shows up occasionally on Florida 'Tahiti' trees, but the great bulk of the trees (including all from registered budwood sources) are free of the disorder, and may live as long as any citrus tree. I wonder why Riverside has not done the same???

When I came to FSC to teach, 25 years ago, I tried to get a tree with wood pocket, to use as a living demonstration plant, but it was impossible to find one. Same for concave gum and blind pocket, odd forms of psorosis that I wanted live examples of -- they've been pretty much exterminated from the state.

Millet: That's what usually happens if sellers and marketers have not taken taxonomy at least, or have been mentally absent from their taxonomy classes.

Malcolm Manners: Indeed they are still declared in fine print at each of the budwood order forms. Was made to convince that this can't be eliminated. So perhaps write a letter to them in this regard.

Patty, thanks for the complement about me on the Citrus Expo CD. Citrus Joe also received a CD of the Expo and he also E-mailed me. However, I really don't know what your talking about as I did not receive a CD, so I did not see it. Millet

Prof Manners,

UCR CCPP has finally released, about 4 cuttings ago, IIRC, a version of Bearss lime from Florida, the one that is free of the wood pocket disorder.
