Auburn University has developed several new low chill kiwi cultivars including 'Golden Dragon' and 'Golden Sunshine' and 'AU Fitzgerald'. Documentation on these cultivars claim they will grow on the Gulf Coast (Baldwin County, Alabama, This is the Mobile area). I was excited to read this so I started checking into the chilling requirements. Unfortunately, it appears the definition of low chill for these cultivars (if the master's thesis I read is correct) is still more than what I would consider "low chill". 'Golden Sunshine' and 'Golden Dragon' weigh in at around 800 to 900 hours. 'AU Fitzgerald' weighs in at around 1100 chilling hours. So much for low chill. I'm hoping I'm wrong. <sigh>
