I've been slowly transplanting my citrus and other tree's, ( Avocado, Figs) Into the RootSaver2 bags. Using the 7Gal. and 15 Gal. sizes.
In using these containers, one should have good air flow on the bottom. (Menard's an Home Depot) sells the wire coated, closet shelving. Which I feel works very well. With some imagination a person can have a pretty nice setup.
I use CHC an Peat. Some of the transplants are in 100% CHC. When washing I also use 30-10-10, in the final rinse I add STEM.
I also found a 2-3 degree differece in using RootSaver bags vs clay, clay being cooler. |

Hi Joe, I just read up more thoroughly on those sites you posted, & I think I may be interested in buying some bags from you to try. Are those the rootsaver 2 bags? I am confused now that drichard said they are containers. Isn't that another product? Why need good air flow at bottom if roots are diverted to sides? You have 16 inch size, how many gal's would that be? Guessing about 7-8?
Am thinking of using them for Brugmansias & Figs which are in pots - sleeping in basement now (6 0f each). Some need to be potted UP in spring. Could I put them in these bags/containers, plant inground next spring, & then pull them up & put them in basement again for next winter? And then, could I keep them in there to plant again inground the next summer?
I read on a brug forum to put plants in 5 gal buckets & ONLY drill big holes around sides of pot & NOT on bottom. This is to be able to dig the pot up easier by chopping the side roots off & not having any deep roots growing out of bottom, which would make it almost impossible to dig & pull up.
Would these bags only last one season or, should I just stick with the 5 gal bucket thingy? Anyway, I may like to get at LEAST 3 bags to try. Thanks much. _________________ Patty

Patty, they are 16 inch diameter, 12 inch high, and if my calculations are correct, it should contain 1.39 cubic ft of space, or about 10.5 real US gallons (you know that a 5 gal container pot is really only 3.6 gallon volume, and my volume calc is the real volume calculation).
My root control bag has a clear strong plastic at the bottom, and the sides are made of geofabric material. You can perhaps place a PVC aerator at the bottom that extends to the side but still inside the bag, one 3/4" PVC pipe, about 15" long and with slits (use saw to create slits), place on the bottom of the root control bag would more than suffice for aeration. I wouldn't punch a hole on the plastic. The rootsaver could be another product but works on the same principles.

Patty sorry for the confusion they are bags. A 7 cu. ft. bale of chc medium cut ( 1/4" - 1/2") chips will fill 5 - 7 Gal bags and 1 - 15 bag
Patty I see another mistake in may past posting I used RootSaver2. It should have read RootTrapper2. The reason for elevating is to insure proper drainage, but the most inportant is the air flow.
If one is unsure about using these bags. I would like to suggest to hold off on them. until further testing. I would more than willing to give updates in the coming months. |

Thanks Guys.
I know that 5 gal POTS are not equal to 5 US gallons. It's very deceiving but that's how it is I guess. I am using 5 gal buckets which are equivelant to US 5 gal. Am also using imperial 5 gal buckets (from Canada) which are equivelant to 6 US gal.
Still thinking, but it sounds good.
Repeat,.....can I use them again the following yr after I dig them up & keep them over winter? Can I replant them inground in same bag? For how long??? _________________ Patty

Patty.. Root Makers ( http://www.rootmaker.com/ Has a number of these bags or containers that may suit your interest.
I chose the RootMaker2 above grown bags for my needs. Perhaps Millet will speak more of his new introduction , at the up coming citrus convention |
