The second flush on my Genova Lemon has grown to a length of 24 inches (61cm). I don't remember the length of the first flush earlier this year, but it was not as long as the second...Unusual. - Millet (574-)

oh well, i'll have to add this one to the eccentrics... Smile (not as breathtaking as millet's, yet worth a look)
at least, i haven't experienced such a prolific second flush, on any of my citrus trees, so far.
my pummelo tree has really outdone itself this time, putting out two extraordinary shoots above the grafting point.
they're healthy looking shoots, one of which is even 16 inches long...
unfortunately, it seems like i'll have to cut them off in order to force the pummelo tree to form the main trunk, instead of branching into a shrub.
what would you do if you were me, cut or leave?

size of new growth

the actual size of the pummelo tree

healthy looking leaves on the second flush

best regards,
igor Smile

I would leave the lower branches. It is the lower branches that develop a tree's strong firm trunk. If you wish to remove the lower branches, you have a long time (at least a year) before you need to remove them for aesthetic purposes. - Millet (548-)

Yes thanks Millet,

I have some similiar shoots and was contemplating their future. One of them is over two foot long and cannot support itself. Should I stake it?

If it is a branch growing near the bottom of the trunk, in this particular situation, I would either cut it off, or cut it back. Most lower support branches a trees produces are more bush like. - Millet (547-)
