Today brought our 5th snow storm of the season. Temperature out side is -20F (-29C). Spend the day in the greenhouse where I picked some Juanita, and Marisol Clementine. I'm sure the greenhouse heater will run most all night. Even the car radio froze. It took about a minute after it was turned on before it produced sound. - Millet |

Do you really mean -20F??
That seems too cold even for Colorado!

Yes -20F, since than the temperature has been below zero several times. The daytime high tomorrow is scheduled to be 11F , and night around -7F to -10F. it is going to be a white Christmas here in Colorado. Skiing at Vail and Aspen is already world class even this early in the season. If you want to ski Vail or Aspen be sure to bring lots of money. Otherwise, you can ski where the natives do. - Millet |

Yeah, this native ski's down my driveway. Millet, I'm sure it's quite a task keeping the cold out of the greenhouse during weeks like this one. Do you suffer much damage? _________________ Just trying to stay alive. |

That is why this Southern Fried, Crawfish tail pinching, head sucking, gumbo slurping, jambalaya muching, snow hating, sun loving country boy stays right down here where the highs are 80 and the lows are 50 most of the time. A freeze is when it gets to 30 and that is too cold. I think we have just a few days in our "winter" that we get a frost....most of them are not remarkable. Have traveled most of the states ....and the ones that get the snow and ice and "real winter" are not for me. I grow my citrus in the ground....................Poor Millet.....................-20 degrees is like Siberia............ |

David, there was just one little, I mean just one great big thing you failed to mention for some reason when you were describing your sun loving country-boy Shangri-La............. HURRICANE'S That cause compete and utter distruction of home and life. I won't even mention those pesky little things you call your state bird. Hmmmm no thanks. _________________ Just trying to stay alive. |

Just part of life Galen............Gustav and Ike took away lots of my established citrus and other trees. I escaped with minor damage to my house and out buildings.......its part of the dues you pay to enjoy the warm climate and the good food, music and culture of the place. The mosquitoes are not much of a pest. They only like folks blood that do not eat plenty of crawfish and garlic........One snowfall of the nasty white stuff wipes out any reason for living N of I-12....Guess I am just Southern by the Grace of God and Louisianian by choice............Good to hear from you. Wish you and yours a merry Christmas and productive 2009. May the good Lord smile upon you and make you his own.................David ~ |

Yes, the warm weather does make a person put up with more. When the day comes, when I retire from the day to day duties I have now, I will seek out a warmer climate than where I'm at now. Thanks for the well wishes. Have a Merry Non White Christmas! _________________ Just trying to stay alive. |

I'm dreaming of a green Easter.
It was -7 today with winds gusting 48 mph. Made a wind chill of almost -40. Friday we had over a ft of snow with some big drifts....I couldn't find which drift my car was in LOL. Snow was up to windows.
Went to store today all bundled up in layers & my heavy long undies. There was a guy in parking lot --musta been on crack! He wore tennis shoes & socks, baggy shorts over bare legs, light jacket, no gloves or hat. He HAD to be on something, or maybe I'm just a wee wee to -40 wind chills.
We broke a record w/over 34 inches snow so far for December. _________________ Patty

Your are right Buddinman............It would not be good to live in a place where they dont make good boudain. I would have to make my own and that might be a thing to watch.
Patty that would not do for me. I dont know how you guys could stand that. I am one that stays outside all day every day unless its impossible. To have it that cold would render me null and void and you would find me in a corner covered with all that I could find and praying for a warmer day. I would be sad in my heart and void of process in my mind...I just can not take any cold weather............Hope that you get what you seek Galen. We all live whre we have to for the most part...and at some point in life we get to live where we want to....................I guess that one opts for the place with the evils that he can tolerate............have a Merry Christmas all..............................David |

Poor Patty and Millet!
We don't miss that weather at all, Patty! We've had a lot of rain lately, but has been up in the 50s, even put some of my buggy trees outside for a bath! We did get down to 18F (~ -8C) last night, our coldest yet.
We went out every 1.5 hours to feed the wood stove in the greenhouse. _________________ Susan B

It has been below zero most every night since I first posted this thread, and many of the daytime temperatures have not been above freezing. From now until March, 99 percent of the nights will develop into a hard freeze. . I rather like the cold, as winter is my second favorite season of the year, behind fall. Summer is my least favorite season. I sent my oldest son to Florida for college, the bugs and the humidity were a real killer. - Millet |

I can't imagine living where it get so cold. I am use to it warming up into the 60's most days and have not liked the cold weather in the 50's we have been having. You guys must have to pay a lot of keep your greenhouses and homes warm during the winter. So far it has gotten down to 31 here with minor damage to the mango tree, tomatoes, and bannas. |
