Georgia: Good citrus harvest this year
In 2009 Georgia expects a very good citrus harvest, more than 120,000 tonnes. Of this amount 100,000 tonnes will come from Adjara, 16,000 from Guria and about 4,000 from Samgerelo. Of this total around 95,000 tonnes will be exported, the rest processed and sold at the domestic market.
In 2008 Georgia had a poor citrus fruit harvest. In 2007 however it was almost 100,000 tonnes.
The major export market for Georgian citrus is Ukraine, which will presumably consume 50,000 tonnes of our citrus fruit. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan also import it, although Belarus has only started doing so this year. Three major companies will process the fruit for domestic consumption.
