Where can I find Flying Dragon that is ready for grafting? I looked around Home Depot and Lowe's but didn't see anything resembling it. I also went to a large local nursery and they didn't know what I was talking about. I am not looking to grow from seed or order online. Is it known under a different name at local nurseries?
If I wanted to drive around in Los Angeles and pick up a FD plant, where would I go? |

I've never seen a rootstock for sale in a citrus state in a retail nursery. Demand is too low. I grow a few citrus trees every year and sell the occasional rootstock. I'm in Texas so I can't help you. |

Flying Dragon is a cultivar of Poncirus trifoliata
trifoliate orange
Poncirus trifoliata Flying Dragon
Citrus Trifoliata Monstrosa
Try out these other names for it.

My strong guess is that you will not find Flying Dragon for sale as a tree anywhere. In all the years that I have been growing citrus, I have never seen a Flying Dragon tree offered for sale at a nusery. Later on in the fall, there should be a lot of Flying Dragon seeds available on this forum. If you want the root stock, you will probably have to grow your own, unless a member of this forum has a few graftable sized trees they would sell. Good luck. - Millet (943-) |

Thanks for the responses.
I wanted to create a Frankentree but I was hesitant to use an established fruiting tree because I am always reluctant to cut off fruiting branches.
I'll have to buy a citrus tree and suck it up and cut cut cut.
What would the be the best tree to use for this? I'm thinking something that's very vigorous. I see a lot of Eureka Lemon trees that are very vigorous. Or maybe a Navel?
I'm not looking to graft a particular variety but rather as many different kinds that I can get my hands on.
What would be your opinions to use as a base tree? |

I did multiple budded trees that were sour orange stock with eureka interstem then I budded on the eureka. In my opinion if you are hesitant to cut off limbs just do t budding. You can t bud and if it works good if not try again. _________________ South Texas gardener |

I don't think any Florida nursery will ship out of state now but maybe they will. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

Sorry Fred,
I didn't mean to offend, belittle or step on your toes.
I am really quite ignorant to all this Citrus stuff having just recently became more interested in growing Citrus.
Imagine my surprise when I was told I couldn't drive five miles over the state line and buy an orange tree to bring home and plant or that my mother in law couldn't give us a cutting to graft since she lives in Alabama or that I can't pick grapefruit off my tree and give her one.
These rules are just over whelming and sometimes I forget that everyone else already knows these things. As you can see from where you quoted me I wasn't even sure, that is why I said "maybe they will"
Again my apologies,
I think I'll have that Bourbon now!!!

No need to apologize-- for anything- No offense taken here
Hopefully my point got across to whom it was intended for, and no offense is meant there either

I have some Flying Dragon plants that I could sell, they are about 5 ft tall and would have to be trimmed to fit in a shipping box.
I don't think I can send them to California, though.
