nube to to the forum I'm a date grower in Indio CA. I grow mostly Barhi and Medjool although I also have 8 other varieties. I don't know much about other palms but dates are my thing. Been growing on and off since 1977.
I also have about 100 citrus, 40 different varieties that we mostly eat or give to friends and a good bit of Daisy tangerine that I sell locally. Daisy and Kinnow are my personal favorites.
Just wanted say hi and introduce myself. Hi to Millet, I recognize you from GardenWeb I think. also JoeReal and maybe some others.
So howdy, how does your orchard grow?

Hi Arthur and welcome to the forum. I remember you from GW a few years back.
I have a few Date palms I grew from seed. Problem here in the southeast is we have way to much humidity to produce any decent fruit. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Yes Laaz, but you do have some nice Phoenix theophrastii Cretan date palms growing. I wonder how they'll do in time?
Cheers, Barrie. |

Glad to have you here Arthur. I visit Palm Springs - Coachella Valley twice a year. My favorite things about the area are the date palms and Joshua Tree Natl park. I've been curious which citrus are best adapted to your climate. I have friends in Cathedral City and landscaped their property last year. Look forward to your posts. |

I just saw this post...My moms side of the family is from Southern California. I guess palm trees and citrus are in my blood... My great aunt and her husband ran date orchards in palm springs and palm desert and Indio and??? 'His' trees are still around, most notably on the campus of College of the Desert (COD) I still have family there - but no longer in the date business. By the way his name was Arthur as well Nothing beats a good date

Are dates hard to grow? I love the taste of dates and figs, but I am not that much of an adventurist yet. I am only in my 2nd year of citrus. |
