I recently received a Meiwa kumquat, which had an unripe fruit that fell off in shipping. Curious, I cut it open and was surprised to see 7 seeds. Today I went and picked another unripe fruit off it, and found 9 seeds.
The fruit is mostly round, but maybe is a little enlongated, too.
Do I have the wrong variety or just a seedy Meiwa? With that many seeds in a small fruit (about the size of a nickel) I wouldn't call them very edible... _________________ Susan B

They are seedy, but you don't eat them all that fast. I find it pretty easy to get the seeds out after I bite the top off. I don't eat that many at one time because they make my lips tingle. _________________ Skeet

Thanks Skeeter,
I was surprised to see that many seeds. The Meiwa from Stan only had none, one, or rarely two seeds. Usually none. _________________ Susan B

Hi Susan, I have some very small - pea size meiwa's growing but I picked one to check for seeds & I found about 5 seeds in it. Can't wait till they ripen.
Skeet, that's so funny:
"I don't eat that many at one time because they make my lips tingle."

If it has 3 seeds, the citrus industry would gladly label it as Seedless.
I sometimes have pea sized Calamondin fruit with two seeds occupying the whole thing inside the peel, without a drop of juice, and by golly, it is seedless, according to the citrus industry.
Well 5 seeds? It would be considered as almost seedless. |

Before eating kumquats like Meiwa, it is best to bleet them first. That is, you roll them between the palms your hands so as to bruise the peels. Then eat the rinds slowly, it should taste sweeter, and most of the astringency removed. |

Patty-- You are right! I don't like horseradish either. I like the kumquats, but they do make my lips tingle and even make them feel a little numb--which is really what the habaneros do-- I usually only eat a couple of the habaneros at a time as well--unless I am in a contest. _________________ Skeet

My Meiwa tree was my latest purchase. Mine were seedy also, but I didn't mind. I ate about half of the fruit on the tree, but I had shared some with our pastor's son and he ate the rest. I didn't mind though. I like to see children's interest in gardening. When I aerate the yard, my daughter puts sticks in the holes saying "daddy I'm planting trees".

Joe, I roll lemons & limes on countertop first before I juice them & it works - get more juice out of them .
Sorry Skeeter, I'm still laughing
How you can pucker up over a meiwa kumquat & still be able to eat hot peppers WHOLE LOL. I would be drinking gallons of milk after one pepper
Phillip, my sister in law broke a branch off of a bush to stake up tomatoes & it grew roots & started growing. She was very surprised...hope that happens to your daughter! I'm sure she would be excited!
Hey, you let us know when you have this next baby...boy or girl etc!!! _________________ Patty

It won't likely happen to my daughter (at least with the aeration holes). Daddy uproots the "trees" to mow the lawn.

It's going to be a girl!! She's due in the middle of February and we're naming her Elizabeth. We haven't settled on a middle name. My wife likes "Joy", but I'm not sold on it. Maybe a name that's citrus related . . . like . . . "Citrange" or "Kumquat" or better yet "Citrangequat". Okay, okay, maybe Joy isn't so bad. I know, I know . . . "Men!! You can't live with them and you can't shoot them".
