Certain size oranges are more popular with consumers than others. Particularly favored are those in the middle of the range of sizes. Extra large sizes may be less juicy than average, are more difficult to squeeze juice from, and cost more per fruit. Smaller size fruit are usually higher in juice contend and also higher in sugar than the average , but more of them must be squeezed to get the same volume of juice. Medium sizes are also preferred for fresh fruit use, except when sold by the gift fruit trade, where larger sizes (especially grapefruit and navel oranges) are preferred. The preference for oranges of medium size is well known to both fruit wholesalers and by the marketing agreement committees, which may restrict the sizes as well as the grades of any citrus fruit that may be marketed. When the harvest is running heavily to small sizes, more smaller sizes will be permitted to go to market than when the bulk of the crop is of medium or larges sizes.
