It probably doesn't matter a whole lot, but hoping you can give some direction in case. I live in the central San Joaquin Valley CA, Citrus (and lots of other fruit) country.

I am planting:
Moro Blood
Gold Nugget
Page
Tango
Nules Clementine
*All on Trifoliate.

All locations are considered full sun, since they'll have well over 8 hours of sunlight. But some spots are partially shaded by existing landscape, fencing, and housing. Some shade morning vs. afternoon light.

Location #1: South-East corner: Most shady. Sun is mid-morning thru mid-afternoon. No early morn. nor late afternoon.

Location #2: East border. Gets from late morning thru late afternoon (i.e. only "hot sun").

Location #3: East border: Same as #2 but shaded for a couple more hours.

Location #4: Southern. Most sun. Early morning thru late afternoon.

Location #5: Southern. Same as #4 but a shaded a couple hours more.

My thoughts were they are probably all OK in any spot, but I'm thinking more about the effects of late fruiting trees (like Gold Nugget) being exposed to very hot (110+) sun. Or coloring for Moro Blood -- that sort of thing.

Thoughts of which trees should go where?

No response? How about a simpler question:

In a very hot micro-climate (ambient temps 110+ all summer), is there any advantage to planting a Summer fruiting mandarin, like Gold Nugget, in a partially shaded position? I.e. Protecting ripe mandarins from direct super-hot afternoon sun?

Thanks in advance,

C4F, since you live in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV), and because a lot of citrus and other tropical fruit are commercially grown in the SJV, for excellent information in you area for citrus varieties and environmental effects on citrus, contact:

University of California Extension Service
Kern County Citrus & Tropical Fruit
1031 So. Mt. Vernon Ave.
Bakersfield, CA 93307
Tel: 661-868-6221

They should be able to give you any and all information concerning citrus in your area. By the way, they also put out an excellent monthly news letter. You can sign up for the new letter at the same time.

Just from personal experience from a very different climate than yours, my Nules Clementine really struggles with afternoon sun so I would vote that for spot #1. The only other variety on your list that I have grown in a Moro Blood Orange, which was in full all day sun and did great, so I would vote for it to take spot #4.
