I have planted and seeded etrogs which are a jewish staple for the holiday of sukkot which finishes on Friday.

In the past I just cut them up and used the seeds in seed farm trays at the time. But as a project for my kids school I want to hold the seeds for about 6 months for a project for them in February.

What is the best way to do it? Each Etrog has tons of seeds in it. Should i let them shrivel up and then cut them when we need them? Cut them now but how to protect the seeds?

Thank you in advance.

You want to harvest the seed, let them soak overnight in clean water. Let them dry for a day or so & then add a fungicide like Captan and put them in a zip-lock bag in the fridge.

Laaz,
Will see if I can find the Captan locally, Lowe's or Home Depot? Walmart?
Once dried and in the bags, they won't sprout in the fridge will they?
I suppose some might and that's ok but prefer that not to happen.
Thanks for the reply.

No, as long as they are cold in the fridge.

Hello mretrog,

I tried & failed to grow from my etrog after last sukkot. The seed sprouted and after a week or two withered and died. I would like to try again this year, can you give me some tips and share your knowledge of how to grow an etrog tree from seed.

I know I had bad soil which may have contributed. I now have a better growing medium and hope for better results. Also, I live in Maryland and will be doing this indoors.

Thank you!

Hi Siman !

I grow citrus seeds for decades indoors.

The only fault you can do is to keep them too wet and the roots will rot.

Just give water till a lil comes out at the bottom.
If it is still there after 30 minutes put it away.

Water again only if the soil feels dry.

You can use normal pot soil.
